Instant Challenge Training is FULL

Thanks to all the teams who have registered for this Saturday's Instant Challenge training!  We'll be at John B Dey Elementary School.  A schedule will be drafted tomorrow night during our board meeting and emailed to TMs of participating teams.  Reminder that the fee is $10 for participation.

In addition, don't forget that Saturday is the deadline for registering (cheaply) for the regional tournament!  Please send registration money to the Assembly Drive address listed in the online registration form.  If you'll be at the IC training, you can bring your check to the site and we'll collect it from you then.  After Saturday, the price for registering for the tournament goes up.

IC-A-Week #6

Today's sample IC comes from Montana DI's IC webpage.  They have some great tips about how best to tackle both TASK and PERFORMANCE type Instant Challenges.  Check them out!

LIT BY GRID

Challenge: Your task is to perform a story you create from a random set of characteristics, situations, imaginary props, and settings.

Scene: The editors of a new literature series for young people needs help coming up with short stories. Your team has been selected to help create a new and unique story to be included in this publication.

Time: Part 1 you will 2 minutes to use your IMAGINATION to create a list of 6 characters, 6 props, 6 settings and 6 situations. In Part 2 you will have 3 minutes to create a story to perform for the appraisers using the characteristics randomly selected from each column by the roll of a die. In Part 3 you will have 2 minutes to perform your story.

Set-Up: On the table is a grid to be completed in Part 1. There is also a blank sheet of paper and 2 pencils you many use in Part 2.

Procedure:

Part One (2 minutes) On the grid create a list of 6 characters, 6 props, 6 settings (places) and 6 situations. (For this challenge a situation is a critical, trying or unusual state of affairs such as getting gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe on a hot day.)  Following part one the team will roll a die to select which item from of each category must be includedin the story.

Part Two: (2 minutes) The team will create a story using the 4 randomly selected elements from the grid in part 1. You may use the blank paper and pencils to help create your story.

Part Three (2 minutes) Your team will perform its story for the appraisers using imaginary props andscenery.

Materials:

• 1 Characteristic Grid
• 1 blank sheet of paper
• 2 pencils
• none of these items may be used in the performance.

Scoring:

You will receive up to:

A. 5 points each (20 points maximum) for the creativity of the randomly selected items on your grid.
B: 30 points for the creativity of your story.
C: 30 points for the creativity of your performance.
D: 20 points for how well your team works together.



IC-A-Week #5

This week's Instant Challenge is from an interactive resource!  Take your team on an journey of discovery and exploration in Reggie Bunis' Instant Challenge Playhouse!  Here's an example challenge from this website:

The Cabinet Challenge:

1. This is a three-part challenge. The cabinet holds duct tape, toothpicks, yarn, labels, scissors, and a bottle of something. What's in that bottle anyway???

In Part 1, your team has one minute to brainstorm ideas of what is in this bottle. In Part 2, using the material in the cabinet (25 toothpicks, 3" of duct tape, 12" of yarn, 2 mailing labels, and a pair of scissors) and a lot of imagination, what can you create that will detect what is in the bottle? You will have three minutes to build your device. As part of this time, you will tell the judges you have named this device.

Finally, in Part 3, your team will have two minutes to demonstrate the use of your device by the non-verbal use of mime. Your team will be scored 1-10 on your creative idea from Part 1. You will be scored 1-20 on the creativity of your device and use of imagination. In Part 3, you will be scored 1-25 for your demonstration. Additionally, you will be scored 1-15 for how well your team worked together. 

(Coaches: In Parts 1 & 2, encourage cooperative dialog. Are the team members learning each other's strengths? Are they learning to listen to each other? After doing the problem, allow the team to brainstorm alternate uses for the materials. Did they plan their mime demonstration? Practice a variety of ways to demonstrate doing a task.)

IC-A-Week #3

This week, the featured IC comes from a group of volunteer parents and students in Iowa who have put together lots of sample IC problems for all to use under a Creative Commons License.  See their work at the cre8iowa Instant Challenge Library!

Ping Pong Animal

Challenge: Your TASK is to build a “creature” that can toss ping pong balls as high as possible.

Time: You will have 7 minutes to use your IMAGINATION to create your “creature” and to toss 12 ping pong balls as high as possible.

Set-up: On the table are materials for building a creature. On the floor is a 12-inch x 12-inch taped square in which your “creature” must stay whileit tosses the ping pong balls.

Procedure:

Part 1: Create a “creature” to toss ping pong balls using the materials provided. The completed “creature” must fit inside the taped square on the floor. The ping pong balls may be used for testing purposes.

Part 2: The team will place its “creature” inside the taped square on the floor when it is ready to toss ping pong balls for score. The “creature” may not leave the taped square once Part 2 begins. No part of the “creature” may touch anything outside of the square while tossing ping pong balls. Each ping pong ball may be tossed only once for score. The “creature” can be repaired at any time, but the clock will continue to run.

Materials:

• 12 mailing labels
• 2 paper cups
• 12 ping pong balls
• 2 sheets of newspaper
• 2 envelopes
• pipe cleaners
• 10 straws
• 5 Index cards
• 3 rubber bands

Scoring: You will receive

A. 5 points for every 3 inches that a ball is tossed, up to 50 points
B. Up to 25 points for the creativity of the “creature”
C. Up to 25 points for how well your team works together

For the Appraisers only:

Set-up:

1. Ahead of time, tape a paper “ruler” to the wall that is broken up into 3-inch increments.

2. Tape a 12-inch by 12-inch square close enough to the wall so that Appraisers can gauge ping pong balls for height when they are tossed.

3. Measuring of a ping pong ball’s height will be approximate, not exact.To minimize the subjectivity of this “measurement,” each Appraiser shall record his/her measurement to the nearest 3 inch interval for each ball. The measurements will be totaled for each Appraiser, and multiplied for Team Score (5 points each inch). Total all ball height scores, then divide by the total number of Appraisers.

Special considerations:

1. This challenge runs 7 minutes long and includes both Part 1 and Part 2. It is up to the team to determine when Part 2 begins.

2. During Part 1, the team may test the tossing of ping pong balls outside the taped square. Once the team places the “creature” inside the taped square, however, this signifies that Part 2 has begun.

3. If the team repairs the “creature” during Part 2, the “creature” must remain within the taped area.

4. Although a team member may initiate some part of the “creature” to cause it to toss ping pong balls, a team member may not be part of the “creature,” and the “creature” must do the tossing.

IC-A-Week #2

Here's a quick PERFORMANCE warm-up you can use with your teams at the beginning of a meeting or practice!  This Instant Challenge comes courtesy of Federico Felixberto and his website at  http://www.angelfire.com/wi/thinkingcaps/.  Have fun with this one!

Snapshots!

Divide the team into two groups.  One group must tell each other about their summer vacation.  The other group must act out photographs as the vacations are being described.  The people acting out the photograph must hold the photograph (stay completely still) for at least 20 seconds.  When one of the group describing their vacation laugh at one of the photographs, the groups must switch roles.

Challenge: Present a PERFORMANCE in which your team makes a ship move.

Time: You will have up to 5 minutes to use your IMAGINATION to plan your PERFORMANCE. You then will have up to 2 minutes to present your PERFORMANCE to the Appraisers.

The Scene: Your team’s ship has suddenly stopped moving.

• Part One (5 minutes): Create a PERFORMANCE where your team makes a ship move. You will be given two copies of a list of imaginary props to include in the presentation. You should also add one imaginary prop of your choice. Write this prop on both copies of the sheet. Give one copy of the sheet to the appraisers at the end of part one.


• Part Two (2 minutes): Present your PERFORMANCE to the appraisers.

Materials:

You will be given two copies of the list of imaginary props in Part One. All other props should also be imaginary. A piece of paper and a pencil will be available for your team to use as you plan your PERFORMANCE.

Scoring: You will receive up to:

A. 10 points (40 points maximum) for how creatively you use each of the props on the list.
B. 10 points for the creativity of the prop you choose.
C. 10 points for the creativity of how you use the prop you choose.
D. 20 points for the creativity of your PERFORMANCE.
E. 20 points for how well your team works together.
